Everybody likes to take a trip in the car and many people visit San Antonio in the family car. After all, road travel is one of Americas favorite pastimes. Travel information presented here focuses on road travel, traffic conditions and the San Antonio highway infrastructure.
San Antonio Road Travel
Transguide - Roads, highways and back streets are plentiful all across San Antonio seeing that it's the eighth largest city in the US. Being a city of this size means we do have traffic, construction and congestion. However, the relatively new Transguide traffic system has given San Antonio drivers the ability to alternate their route based on traffic conditions that are monitored by the Texas Department of Transportation. These conditions are broadcast throughout the city on large highway message signs over major San Antonio freeways. Traffic information such as vehicle accidents, lane closures and road construction is displayed by the Transguide sign system.
San Antonio Highway Loops - There are two loops that surround San Antonio, Loop 410 and Loop 1604. Loop 410 is the inner loop and is a continuous highway around the city while the outer Loop 1604 has traffic lights and intermittent stop signs that can make auto travel in the city burdensome and a headache in some areas. If possible, avoid Loop 1604 between IH-10 West and Highway 90 West at all costs. This portion of San Antonio's Loop 1604 is a traffic nightmare.
San Antonio Highways - The major highways running through San Antonio run both north and south and east and west. The San Antonio highways running north and south are IH-35 and IH-37 while IH-10 and Interstate 90 run east and west. All of these major highways converge in the downtown San Antonio area giving travelers the convenience of connecting roadways.
